As developers look to retirement, or there is a change in sustainment contractors, valuable "tribal knowledge" of business-critical applications can be lost. We supply the Orion Governance Data Fabric  to mine and analyze software applications, and provide automated and accurate Total Application Transparency. 

This transparency  saves a great deal of time and expense for development teams involved in change control and impact analysis of complex software applications.. Impact analysis allows these teams to know that if specific structures are changed or removed altogether, what the impact of those changes might be to these.

The process of gaining application transparency is greatly accelerated because in the Orion software extracted active metadata is displayed using interactive diagrams. When a developer can browse the metadata, and drill down into relevant details on demand, then application transparency is achieved in a way that is natural to the developer.

Significant reductions in the effort required to perform full impact analysis have been reported when the Orion tool is implemented. Also, newly hired developers will be productive much sooner and will require less assistance from the existing staff when the tool becomes part of Dev Ops are, and part of any agile software development lifecycle.

Our Data Fabric tool can map and produce accurate visualizations of intra-application dependencies, but also application upstream and downstream dependencies, to help provide more comprehensive understanding of the application's place in the portfolio and ecosystem.

Accurately documenting and understanding these dependencies is a critical factor to consider before making application rationalization decisions or recommendations.

Clients can also utilize the Data Fabric to enhance mature agile development practices, including DevSecOps. Metadata can be assigned a lifecycle phase—or version (dev, test, production)—to help synchronize the agile continuous delivery application development lifecycle. The tool identifies complex relationships and linkages to facilitate impact analysis to speed accurate application changes. The repository also provides continual up-to-date, in-depth documentation, which helps to ensure the repeatability and continuous process improvement that are key to achieving higher CMMI Maturity Levels.

Wide Language Coverage

The Orions oftware works with multiple programming languages, including COBOL, PL/1, Assembler, and NATURAL, along with Java, C, C++. By parsing the production source code to identify and categorize every single language component, it maps and identifies the inherent relationships between those components. Semantic relationships between languages, technologies and platforms are connected, and the end result is a complete inventory and relationship map of every application element within the portfolio across both mainframe and distributed systems.
